About a festival in a weird village I used to live in

since a long time ago there’s been a festival in my village when summer starts

The adults take all the village kids to the mountain shrine and have them play something like hide and seek? There were all these noisy bugs up there when I was a kid

It’s a small village but there were surprisingly a lot of kids, like 20 kids I think?

so all the kids are given gray costumes to wear and they hide all over the mountain. An adult representing the village goes and finds the kids one by one

of course they try to make sure none of the kids get lost by putting adults all around the hiding area to watch for the kids

I heard that the last child to stay hidden gets to have a feast at the shrine

8: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:29:46.15 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

we usually eat mostly vegetables and such so just hearing about the feast made us excited

but I was kinda scrawny and not very strong or anything so I didn’t find a good hiding place and was found right away

there were probably 4 kids who were found before me gathered in front of the shrine

Of course it was embarrassing to be the found right away but I also kind of felt relieved

after that other kids kept getting found

a little after noon I think most of the kids were gathered in front of the shrine

but my little brother wasn’t there yet so I figured he hadn’t been found yet

they told us to wait quietly in front of the shrine so nobody said anything and it was super boring

9: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:30:27.93 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

but my little brother wasn’t there yet so I figured he hadn’t been found yet

they told us to wait quietly in front of the shrine so nobody said anything and it was super boring

after a bit some adults showed up and said all the kids who had been found could go back down the mountain

they said to go to my house so I went back home

my mom and grandma were in front of the house and gave us onigiri and I think there was also ramune cooled with well water?

Everyone was really excited and ate and drank together

after a bit

we were playing with marbles from the bottles when my little brother returned looking frustrated

my mom said “you did well” and gave him a pat on his head

my brother ate his onigiri but muttered that he wanted to eat the feast at the shrine instead

10: True scary anonymous: 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:31:23.44 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

So the news came that the last kid had been found. Everyone gathered around the well even though they usually avoid it

and then you chant:

Hi-to-tsu ko-mu-ke-ni na-ra-ri-he-ri

Fu-ta-tsu hi-no-ta-ka ni shi-ni-o-chi

Mit-tsu ho-to-ke-wo o-mo-te-na-shi

Yot-tsu-mi wo ha-gi-ta-te ma-tsu-ru

I-tsu-tsu sha-no-ya-no ya-shi-ro-sa-ma

Mut-tsu mi-tsu-ya no go-ka-i-se-ki

Na-na-tsu ni u-tat-te ki-ka-sha-n-se

Yat-tsu no ko-to-no-ha ta-da-ri-na-ri.

at the end we clap twice and it’s done

this poem is pretty easy to remember, of course for the adults but even kids can recite it easily

after this the festival is over and we went home for dinner

my dad was so proud and praised my brother who stayed hidden so long

12: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:33:04.11 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

There’s one more rule the village has

When you turn 16, the kids who are strong or good at physical stuff stay

Kids who are smart or who seem like they’ll be ok on their own leave for the city

I was never that smart but I got along well with the other kids so it was decided I’d go to Tokyo too

Since my brother did well in hide and seek and he was pretty strong, he stayed in the village

When I turned 16 and left my dad said to me

“Take care of yourself and conduct yourself well. Even though you’re leaving the village, you’ll do well. We believe in you.”

That’s what he said, crying

He was always really hard-headed so we didn’t get along much but this time I hugged him and cried too.

Now I’m 23 years old. After that last conversation I’ve been completely independent and lived alone

It’s been almost 8 years now that I’ve lived in Tokyo so I’m used to the life here and all

But all the festivals here are just food stalls and fun stuff so I guess I’m wondering if it was just my village that had this weird festival

14: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:36:24.74 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

As for me…

Recently I can’t get the song out of my head so if someone could help me decipher it I would appreciate that

15: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:38:47.66 ID:g7fy0kWjO

It’s gotta be like y’know

Everyone at the festival takes turns singing so the lyrics get changed, and you just happened to sing it like this?

16: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:39:33.77 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

I just said this above but like

Since “hotoke” means Buddha and everything it’s probably not like a curse or something, I don’t think

17: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:41:08.92 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>15

Everyone chants it at the same time, facing the well, so I don’t think it’s just that I recited it weird

18: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:42:54.44 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

I think I pointed this out earlier but

It mentions the thing being worshipped is a snake, so when it mentions something like tearing apart bodies it probably refers to like shedding maybe

19: True scary anonymous :  2012/07/28(Sat) 13:43:12.43 ID:2vwEcAEd0

>>12

Maybe it’s a variation on child culling?

20: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:50:00.06 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>19

My village definitely had a lot of kids growing up

But like since the kids who win the game are treated to a feast, it seems kinda weird. Normally you wouldn’t do feasts if you need to cull children…

21: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:50:19.36 ID:7f7EPqIk0

In hide and seek the seeking takes more physical ability than hiding lol

23: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:54:11.32 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>21

It’s not quite hide and seek, it’s more like you try to stay hidden and escape

The hiding is pretty difficult too

22: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:53:55.33 ID:2vwEcAEd0

>>20

No I’m talking about the kids who leave at 16

Or maybe it’s to prevent the bloodline from getting too thick. The winner of hide and seek gets treated like a god, right?

24: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:57:19.30 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>22

That could be true, leaving at 16 being the culling

That means I was culled…

25: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 13:58:28.07 ID:2vwEcAEd0

>>24

If that was the case, if you look at it rationally there’s no need to feel in the pits about it

27: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:05:16.76 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>25

I was sent out because they thought I’d be fine by myself so it’s still kind of nice…

But even though I like living in Tokyo and all lately all I think about is my village

I mean like with the song from above, it’s not like I just always have it committed to memory

Lately in my dreams I’ve been singing it in front of the well so I remembered it

I think I want to go back to live in that village

28: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:08:40.70 ID:ZrfKvtZi0

Have you not spoken to your family since leaving?

32: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:11:59.29 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>> 28

I do talk to them on the phone

Like about updates on what’s changed, if there’s a festival this year, that kind of thing

Now that you mention it they’ve been calling a lot more lately

Talking about how it’s been 8 years since I left and yada yada

29: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:09:48.75 ID:g7fy0kWjO

Hitotsu, komuke ni narari heri

→ reduce number of children

Futatsu, hi no taka, nishiochi

→ the last kid left in hide and seek

Mittsu, hotoke o omotenashi

→ feasting in front of the shrine

Yottsu, mi o hagitate matsuru

→ tear the flesh, kill the child

Itsutsu, sha no ja no yashirosama

→ ?

Muttsu, mittsuya no okaiseki

→

Nanatsu ni utatte kikashanse

→ everyone sings circling the well to sing so that whatever is in the well can hear

Yattsu no kotonoe tatarinari

→ when you speak it you get cursed

So the last child in the game who receives the feast?

They’re probably killed and thrown in the well.

33: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:15:49.03 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>29

Now that you mention it I never saw the kid who was last.

I never heard who was last so I didn’t really pay a lot of attention.

34: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:15:50.87 ID:2vwEcAEd0

> Talking about how it’s been 8 years since I left and yada yada

This is important

35: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:20:15.47 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>> 34

When I left they didn’t say anything about eight years being important

I started getting calls right after I started having those dreams so maybe it actually is connected to the festival after all

36: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:22:13.52 ID:2vwEcAEd0

16 years in the village, 8 years outside the village

It’s such a round number it’s bothering me. Are they trying to get him married or something?

38: True scary anonymous: 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:32:19.97 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>36

On the phone they haven’t said anything like “marriage” or “bride” even once

But that reminds me. I don’t think I mentioned it above

The well everyone circles is basically straight across from our front door. We were always told not to go near it from the direction of the setting sun. Now that I think about it might be related to the second line of the song…

39: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:36:04.59 ID:2vwEcAEd0

Do they have the festival this year?

Did you have it when you were 15-16?

40: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:40:52.58 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

>>39

Recently on the phone my parents said that there was a festival this year

The song ends at 8 too so maybe 8 is a special number somehow

41: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:46:12.47 ID:2vwEcAEd0

It might be a festival arranged by Shinto priests

A long time ago there were child sacrifices so that might be the origin of the festival

But the real problem we can’t ignore is this

When your brother did well in the game, your parents were happy, so that seems like it was a good thing.

Or maybe they were happy he didn’t win

Please go home for Obon this year lol

42: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:49:11.43 ID:ZrfKvtZi0

The character “8” is also a bit snakelike, isn’t it.

This really has the feel of oral tradition.

43: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 14:50:25.77 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

Slightly changing the topic, but if “kimon,” northeast, is an unlucky direction, is the ura-kimon a good direction since it’s on the opposite side?

Judging by the sunset and the village well across from our door, I think our house would be in the “ura-kimon”

44: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 15:06:08.02 ID:tZxtL7Hg0

Nah I’m done with this

I was hoping more people might show up but

Today is eight years since I left

One word on the cusp of becoming waste

Two, the day collapses into the heights of West

Three, the face of Buddha is now lovingly erased

Four, in the sign of snake we offer this torn flesh

Five, in the serpent-house, the honored shrine

Six, for three nights we feast and gladly dine

Seven, we sing this song but do not let It hear

Eight lyrics spoken: now the curse draws near

The spirit of a hunted god turns into malice

The world of men turns dark without an end

The grudge has cleaved itself into a part of you

45: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 15:07:12.68 ID:ZYsip4zi0

?

What the hell

46: Ninja Scroll [Lv=40, xxxPT] : 2012/07/28(Sat) 15:19:19.20 ID:cpL5o851O

OP was probably made to memorize the curse chant as a kid. When it became the 8th anniversary of him leaving the village, he was assigned to spread it to other people (to make them into human sacrifices) or something like that.

In other words the chant is something like the video tape from Ring.

Everyones so smart these days lol

102: True scary anonymous :  2012/07/28(Sat) 22:23:35.95 ID:aqpeq6Pj0

What? Did we get cursed?

That’s what he was spreading? Using 2ch to spread the village tradition?

I don’t get it…

Can someone summarize so I can understand

103: True scary anonymous : 2012/07/28(Sat) 22:25:25.33 ID:CTFXrB1z0

Here, 1 takes advantage of the peculiarities of the Japanese writing system to introduce an evolving story element. Initially, he only provides the hiragana of the song, conveying its sounds as accurately as possible while obscuring meanings behind possible homophones – which Japanese has a lot of. This leads to a lively conversation on the possible interpretations of the rhyme. There was really no way to create the same effect in English, so I left the hiragana version as a transcription and focused on translating the final version 1 shares at the end of the thread, this time written in kanji that clarify all the meanings (and show that some of the other commenters were certainly on the right track!).

Despite the difficulties of translation, this story has been included for the way in which it demonstrates a conversational story structure that relies on strangers interacting with its original poster to gain its full effect. It’s not quite an imikowa, since 1 effectively spells out the meaning at the end, but it does share similar features in how it requires co-operation and active participation from its readers.
